The Immortal STEVE REEVES

In my opinion Steve Reeves has the best bodybuilding physique of all time! With his classic ideal shape and symmetry, good looks, and bodybuilding career (not to mention his movie career which spanned a decade) along with bringing bodybuilding mainstream in the 50′s; he has contributed numerous to our great sport of bodybuilding.

MEASUREMENTS (in.):

Height: 6′1"

Weight: 215 lbs.

Shoulder Breadth: 23 1/2 in.

Neck: 18 1/4 in.

Chest: 52 in.

Waist: 29 in.

Hips: 38 in.

Biceps: 18 1/4 in.

Forearms: 14 3/4 in.

Wrist: 7 1/4 in.

Thigh: 26 in.

Calf: 18 1/4 in.

Ankle: 9 1/4 in.

Note that his neck, biceps, and calf measurement are the same, he did this deliberately based on the concept of the Grecian ideal proportions.

TRAINING:

Steve Reeves trained using a whole body routine three times a week, similar to Arthur Jones training concept. He performed app. 2 sets per exercise (I′ve read that the sets ranged from 1-3 so I went with the middle figure) to failure, here is an example of one of his routines:

Shoulders: Press Behind the Neck

Thighs: Hack Squat

Calves: Toe Raises (on block of wood at least 6 in. thick)

Chest: Dips (on parallel bars)

Back: Chin Behind the Neck

Triceps: Pressdown on Lat Machine

Biceps: Incline Dumbbell Curl

He sadly died in a hospital at the age of 74 on May 1st, 2000 in Escondido, California from cancer.

Nice post, I agree, Steve was one great BB-er 🙂

It′s cool you posted that routine as lately I′ve decided to go with a 2x per week full body, with lighter weights and 2-3 sets, short rest periods. My injuries are driving me nuts and I need something less ′offensive′ to them. Being reminded that one of the best physiques ever was built with similar protocol was a nice welcome read 🙂

Analyzer,

Good to hear from you again, how′s it going? Ya, I agree a 2x per week full body routine would be better than training three times a week; because of the chance of overtraining (unless your advanced with a good recovery ability). I′d also give training the whole body once a week and see how it goes, who know′s you might make just as much size and strength gains, but then again, everyones different. The injuries you spoke about, are they from bodybuilding, or from a different activiy?, if you don′t mind my asking.

Hey Garrett- Go′en good thanks 🙂

I am thinking about going 2x per week since I′ll be using lighter loads so I should recover very fast from that kind of training, but we′ll see 😉

Some of my old injuries are from other, some from lifting…

Let′s see…

Both knees – Basketball

Right glute – Squat 1RM

Lower back – ?? age?

Right rhomboid – press behind neck

Right shoulder – bench press

left shoulder – dips

Right upper trap – Beleive it or not, arm wrestling!

Left bicep – My newest addition LOL, lifting an air conditioner last weekend.

Fun fun!

cheers and good talk′en to you again too!

Sad to hear about all those nasty injuries, Analyzer.

All the best and good luck with your new routine!
