One reason HD is not for everybody….

As you know I have been following the CR routine for a while now. One of the hardest aspects of HD is the mental aspect. It is dam hard to go into the gym every week and set a new PR. This may not sound like much, but it really is something very few can do. Something that has helped me..it strays a little from HD….is when I just can′t muster up the confidence to set a PR, I change the exercises for a while. I have found when I return to my original exercises I continue to progress for a while again. I realize this is all mental, and a variation of periodization, but it IS working for me. I am just curious if anybody else has tried this. Thanks, and I hope everybody continues to progress no matter what philosophy you subscribe to.

Dante of Doggcrapp fame writes a lot about the mental attitude necessary when you go into the gym. Except for their occassional back off weeks his guys are always striving for more reps/weight just like HIT. His guys always talk about going to war with their log books in the gym. You treat the log book like your enemy and have to beat it or it wins this time.

I really like Dave Draper′s attitude that you treat the weights with respect and they will do what you tell them. When I grab the weights I′m using I say (in my head at least) I′m going to get ## reps and 9 times out of 10 I′ll hit my goal.

I hear what you′re saying Butters, but sometimes I just get sick and tired of having to set another one 🙂 I do agree with you..maybe it′s just me. Mike also has a chapter on Motivation and Psychology in "High Intensity Training The Mike Mentzer Way" that helps, but I have found it is much easier said than done 🙂 Good Luck with your training and let us know how you are doing. Are you still doing the CR routine?

I haven′t made the switch to CR yet. I′m still making progress on one of Darden′s routine. Basically I′m doing 5 exercises 3x a week.

Leg Press, DB Pullover, Chest Press, BB Curl, Incline Crunch

I′m currently cutting from about 12%BF down to 8%. I should be at my goal in 2-3 weeks. Then I′ll decide where to go as I start to bulk.

I may either do one of his bulking programs, go to the ideal routine, or the CR. I am leaning towards one of the first two options. Before I go to such low volume as CR, I want to milk more frequent routines for all I can.
