chest progress

i started HIT in sept, using the ideal routine, and training chest via the smith machine. my strength on incline went WAY up, and when i switched to regular incline, i was able to do more weight than i had ever done for more reps. 225 x 7 i was forced to take a month off with an injury, and went back to regular incline, only to be stuck at 205 for 7 reps the past 3 workouts. this seems to be an issue with me throughout my training, i can increase my weights in chest using db′s or smith, but when i go to any free weight bench, i seem to stall. the odd thing is, i am making positive gains in every other exercise but this, so i cant imagine it would be overtraining, and i put everything i have into each set. (trust me, 205 pisses me off to no end) anybody else have this phenomena? and do you guys have alternate chest routines maybe i could try? thanks mav.

mav- your stronger on the smith because you dont have to control the weight, just push against it. free weights you have to control the weight, and press it. keep working on the free weights, the smith forces your muscles to work in its groove, and could cause injury. joevuzz

Maverick, The incline also uses more shoulders and starts to involve the traps as well compared to the bench so you may stall on the chest while the traps and shoulders are still improving.

joevuzz, Smith could cause injury? How did you come to that conclusion? I never heard anyone mention this before. To my thinking if you can lift the weight it shouldn′t hurt you.

I never warm up and always do maximum lifts while always maintaining my form. I′ve been lifting since ~1980 and I never even pulled a muscle.

Cheers

so keep plugging? i havent made any progress on incline in 3 weeks, is that a cause for concern? its frustrating bc, 225 for 7 was a great accompl;ishment for me, and this backslide is very frustrating.

If you′ve been stuck at 205X7 for 3 weeks, try doing 210 on your next workout and see if you can′t get 6 reps. Sometimes it′s easier to do JUST A LITTLE more weight for the same reps than it is to get more reps out. Let us know how it goes.
