rep range for dips

I remember Mentzer saying in HD2 dips should be done in a (3-5) range.
Is there any particular reason for that? I understand if its part of a superset, but what about a straight set of dips to failure?
Thanks

In that case he advised to do 6-10 reps to failure.

Great, thank you that′s what I′ve been doing. Except for legs that is a good working range, with pushing ten optimal for me before adding weight
